Additional Information: Large antique ceremonial banner made for Star Light Lodge No. 112, Knights of Pythias, located in Washington, New Jersey.
The central shield is painted and decorated with an armored knight, crossed weapons and the initials: K. of P.
The shield also bears the letters F, C and B, representing the Knights of Pythias principles of: Friendship, Charity and Benevolence
The banner reads:
STAR LIGHT LODGE, No. 112
WASHINGTON, N.J.
This substantial fraternal textile was used as a lodge hall display or carried during ceremonial gatherings, parades and processions. It retains its original style horizontal hanging rod, metallic trim, decorative fringe and tassels.
The banner is composed of several colored fabric panels, likely silk or satin, with painted, applied and embroidered decoration. Ornate Gothic initials and gold colored scrollwork surround the central lodge emblem.
Star Light Lodge No. 112 is documented as a Knights of Pythias lodge in Washington, New Jersey. Based on the materials, lettering style and construction, the banner likely dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, approximately circa 1890–1915. The exact production date and banner maker are unknown.
Unrestored antique condition with substantial age related wear. It is currently displayed in a very large custom wooden shadow box frame with a broken glass display window.
