About this lot

Origin:UK

Period: Late 19th Century

Style: Victorian

Dimensions: Approx. 5 x 6.5 x 4.5 in.

Condition: Patina on metal accents.

Additional Information: Antique Victorian frosted glass biscuit barrel dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, featuring a barrel-shaped glass body with finely etched horizontal banding and metal mounts. The fitted metal lid is surmounted by a decorative coiled rope finial from which hangs the original metal tag engraved “BISCUITS,” a distinctive feature of period biscuit barrels. A hinged swing handle allows the barrel to be easily carried and served at the table, while the frosted glass body provides an elegant contrast to the metal hardware. Popular in British households during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, biscuit barrels were used to serve biscuits, cookies, and other confections during afternoon tea and formal entertaining.
