Condition Reports

How to request a condition report on a lot before you bid with Blue Box Auction Gallery, what a report covers, and how it fits with previews and our terms.

Every lot is sold as it is, so it pays to know its condition before you bid. If you cannot see a piece in person, ask us for a condition report and our team will look at it for you.

What a condition report is

A condition report is our staff’s description of the state of a lot beyond what the catalog listing and photographs show. Depending on the piece, it may cover:

  • Wear, scratches, chips, cracks, or losses
  • Repairs, restoration, or replaced parts that we can see
  • Marks, signatures, labels, and measurements
  • Additional photographs of a detail you ask about

How to request one

  1. Find the lot in the auction catalog and note the auction name and the lot number.
  2. Send your request with the form below, or call (757) 550-0285. Tell us what you would like us to check.
  3. Ask for several lots in one message. It helps us answer faster and more completely.

Ask early. Send requests at least two business days before live bidding begins, so our team has time to examine the lot and reply before the auction starts.

What a condition report is not

A condition report is an opinion offered to help you decide. It is not a warranty or a guarantee, and it may not mention every flaw. All property is sold as is, where is, as set out in our general auction terms and in each auction’s own terms. If a listing or a report does not mention a fault, that does not mean the lot is free of faults.

Seeing it yourself is best

In-person previews are the best way to learn about a lot. Preview dates and times are listed on each auction’s page. See Auction previews for how in-person and remote previews work.
