Additional Description: The 1926 Indian Head $2.50 gold coin is a striking example of Bela Lyon Pratt’s innovative incuse design, which set it apart from traditional American coinage. On the obverse, a Native American chief is shown in profile, his full headdress rendered with fine detail and recessed below the surface, giving the portrait a sculptural depth. The reverse features a flying eagle, also incused, symbolizing strength, freedom, and the nation’s aspirations.
Struck in 90 percent gold, the 1926 issue has substantial intrinsic value, and well-preserved examples exhibit a warm, satiny luster that accentuates the sharpness of the design. The incuse style not only provides a unique visual effect but also helps protect the imagery from wear, allowing the coin’s artistry to endure through decades.
As part of the celebrated Indian Head quarter eagle series, the 1926 coin embodies both innovation and national symbolism. It represents a moment when the U.S. Mint balanced artistic experimentation with the practical demands of circulating coinage.
