Additional Description: The 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint marks the first issue of this iconic American coin series. Designed by George T. Morgan, it features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, modeled after Anna Willess Williams,on the obverse, and a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings on the reverse. As a Philadelphia strike, it bears no mint mark.
This inaugural year is notable for its multiple die variations, including the 8 Tail Feathers, 7 Tail Feathers, and the transitional 7 over 8 Tail Feathers types. These changes reflect early adjustments in the eagle’s design and are of particular interest to collectors.
Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the coin measures 38.1 mm. Issued under the Bland-Allison Act during a period of silver surplus and economic adjustment, the 1878 Morgan Dollar stands as both a numismatic milestone and a reflection of post-Civil War American monetary policy. Its historical significance and variety make it a foundational piece for any serious Morgan Dollar collection.
