Additional Description: The Washington Quarter, introduced in 1932, was conceived to honor the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth and soon became a lasting fixture of American coinage. Sculptor John Flanagan’s design presents a stately, neoclassical portrait of Washington, calm, resolute, and rooted in the traditions of early American portraiture, while the reverse features a heraldic eagle, wings spread in balanced authority.

Struck in 90 percent silver until 1964, these quarters were produced at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, with the 1932-D and 1932-S issues especially prized for their low mintages. Over the ensuing decades, the design remained largely unchanged, its simplicity lending it an enduring familiarity amid shifting artistic trends. By 1965, rising silver prices brought an end to the traditional composition, ushering in the copper-nickel clad era.

The silver Washington Quarters of 1932 to 1965 thus bridge the classical and the modern in American numismatics, coins of everyday use that also embody the nation’s respect for continuity, dignity, and historical memory.
