Additional Description: The 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar from the San Francisco Mint, distinguished by the “S” mint mark on the reverse, had a relatively modest mintage of approximately 657,000 coins. This makes it one of the lower production figures for the series, and considerably scarcer than its Philadelphia and New Orleans counterparts from the same year.

As is characteristic of San Francisco coinage, the 1888-S often exhibits strong strike quality, with crisp detail in Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers. George T. Morgan’s enduring design is fully present here: the obverse features a left-facing Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by a laurel wreath and inscriptions.

Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1888-S was issued during a period of high-volume silver coinage driven by federal mandates rather than public demand, yet its relatively low output reflects San Francisco’s more conservative approach to production that year.
