Additional Description: The 1904 German Bremen 2 Mark coin is a particularly engaging product of the German Empire’s federal coinage system, in which individual states retained the right to issue coins bearing their own symbols and rulers under the imperial framework. Struck in .900 fine silver, this coin represents the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, one of the historic Hanseatic ports that played a central role in Germany’s maritime trade and civic identity. The obverse presents Bremen’s proud civic emblem; a key beneath a crown, the centuries-old symbol of the city and its patron, Saint Peter. The design is both simple and dignified, emphasizing Bremen’s autonomy and mercantile heritage rather than depicting a monarch. Around the edge, the legend Freie Hansestadt Bremen (“Free Hanseatic City of Bremen”) asserts the city’s status as an independent state within the German Empire. The reverse follows the standardized imperial format, featuring the crowned German imperial eagle, encircled by Deutsches Reich 1904 and the denomination Zwei Mark. The contrast between the local and imperial symbols is striking; the civic modesty of the Bremen key paired with the grandeur of the imperial eagle.
