Additional Description: The 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar from the San Francisco Mint is a well-regarded early issue in the series, known for its typically strong strike and high production quality. Bearing the “S” mint mark just below the wreath on the reverse, this coin reflects the skilled craftsmanship for which the San Francisco Mint had already earned a reputation by the late 19th century.

What distinguishes it is not rarity, but quality, many examples were sharply struck with full details, especially in the hair above Liberty’s forehead and the eagle’s breast feathers, areas often weak on coins from other mints.

Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features a classical yet distinctly American portrait of Liberty, while the reverse displays a bold heraldic eagle, wings spread, clasping arrows and an olive branch, symbols of preparedness and peace.

Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, issued during the early years of the Bland-Allison Act, the 1879-S Morgan Dollar was part of the U.S. government’s effort to absorb domestic silver production through large-scale coinage.

Today, the 1879-S is admired for its elegant design and consistency in quality. While not rare, it is an essential date for those assembling a complete Morgan Dollar set and a rewarding example of the high standards upheld at the San Francisco Mint.
