Additional Description: The 1964 U.S. Silver Half Dollar marks both a beginning and an end. It was the first year of the Kennedy Half Dollar,  struck in honor of President John F. Kennedy just months after his assassination in November 1963, and it was also the final year U.S. half dollars were minted for circulation in 90% silver. Designed by Gilroy Roberts (obverse) and Frank Gasparro (reverse), the coin was fast-tracked through Congress and the U.S. Mint, a rare instance in which a coin became a national gesture of mourning.

On the obverse, Kennedy’s profile faces left, cleanly modeled and modern in character, reflecting the optimism and youth often associated with his presidency. The reverse bears the Presidential Seal, an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, encircled by fifty stars
