Additional Description:  The 1964 U.S. Silver Half Dollar is both a beginning and a memorial, issued in the wake of national tragedy and representing the final year that circulating half dollars were struck in 90% silver. Following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963, Congress swiftly approved a redesign of the denomination to honor him. The coin was released in early 1964, just months after his death, making it one of the most rapidly conceived and produced coins in U.S. history.

Designed by Gilroy Roberts (obverse) and Frank Gasparro (reverse), the Kennedy Half Dollar featured a clean, modern profile of the late president, paired with the heraldic Presidential Seal. It struck a deeply emotional chord with the public, and the coin was widely hoarded—both as a keepsake and a symbol of collective mourning.
