Additional Description: The U.S. Silver Half Dollars from 1917–1918, 1920, and 1933–1936 trace the early and middle years of the Walking Liberty series, a period that spans war, recovery, and the onset of economic crisis. Struck in 90% silver and designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, these coins feature Liberty in graceful stride toward the rising sun, draped in the American flag and holding laurel and oak—imagery that captured the nation’s ideals of strength, peace, and forward momentum.

The 1917 and 1918 issues circulated during World War I, and while the design remained consistent, early modifications such as repositioning the mint mark signaled ongoing refinements at the Mint. The 1920 half dollars reflect a brief postwar optimism, though the economic volatility of the 1920s soon slowed production. No half dollars were issued for much of the next decade, and when minting resumed in 1933, it was during the depths of the Great Depression. Coins from 1933 to 1936 reentered circulation in a country struggling with unemployment and economic hardship, yet still grounded in national symbolism.
