About this lot
Country of Origin: Korea
Style: Celadon Maebyeong
Dimensions: Approx. 5 x 8 x 12 in.
Condition: No visible chips or cracks, has minimal base wear
Additional Information: Korean celadon-style maebyeong, or plum vase, featuring a pale turquoise-green crackle glaze and traditional decorative motifs of flying cranes and clouds within roundels, with stylized leave shaped panels surrounding the lower portion.
The vase follows the characteristic maebyeong form, with a small opening, short neck, rounded shoulders, constricted lower body, and slightly flared foot. The form derives from the Chinese meiping, or “plum bottle,” and became one of the principal vessel shapes of Goryeo-period Korean ceramics.
The celadon glaze and crane decoration are inspired by the inlaid celadon tradition associated with Goryeo ceramics. The underside bears dark handwritten or brushed calligraphy along with a small red square maker’s seal beneath the glaze. These markings are consistent with a later Korean artisan or studio-produced celadon.
