Additional Description: The 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint is a well-regarded issue in the early years of the series, known for its sharp strike quality and attractive luster, hallmarks of coins produced at this mint. Identified by the “S” mint mark beneath the wreath on the reverse.

Like other Morgans from 1880, the San Francisco issue includes a number of die varieties, including overdates such as 1880/79, where remnants of the previous year’s numerals are visible beneath the final digits.

The obverse, designed by George T. Morgan, features Lady Liberty in profile, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton. The reverse shows a powerful eagle with wings spread, grasping arrows and an olive branch, framed by inscriptions denoting its denomination and national identity.

Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, it was produced under the ongoing mandate of the Bland-Allison Act, during a time when silver dollar coinage was being driven largely by legislation rather than public demand
