Additional Description: The 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint is a mid-series issue that reflects the ongoing production of silver coinage during a time of relative economic stability in the post-Reconstruction United States. As with all Philadelphia issues of the era, it bears no mint mark, distinguishing it from coins struck at branch mints. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features a dignified profile of Liberty, modeled after Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams. Her image is framed by stars and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The reverse presents a boldly rendered eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing a balance of strength and peace. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, production was authorized under the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to convert large amounts of domestically mined silver into coinage, regardless of market demand.
