Additional Description: The 1903 Silver Morgan Dollar from the New Orleans Mint is one of the most fascinating and historically significant issues in the Morgan series. George T. Morgan’s design features Liberty in profile, her hair adorned with wheat and cotton to represent the nation’s agricultural and industrial strengths. The reverse bears the image of the American eagle with wings outstretched, clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. The O mintmark beneath the wreath identifies its New Orleans origin, a mint that served the South during a time of shifting silver policies and limited coinage demand. Struck in 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, this issue became famous for its rarity in circulation; most were held in storage for decades, thought to be nearly lost until the 1960s, when a small number were released from Treasury vaults. 1903 New Orleans Morgan’s are highly prized for their scarcity and historical intrigue. Each surviving example stands as a tangible link to the artistry, politics, and evolving economy of the United States at the dawn of the twentieth century.
