Additional Description: A Whitman folder containing Roosevelt dimes from 1946 to 1979 charts more than three decades of American history through a single, familiar denomination. Introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after his death, the dime replaced the Mercury design with a clean, modern portrait by John R. Sinnock. The choice was symbolic: Roosevelt had been closely associated with the March of Dimes campaign to combat polio, making the denomination especially fitting.

Clad dimes, those struck from 1965 onward, represent a pivotal shift in U.S. coinage, when intrinsic metal value gave way to modern, cost-efficient materials. Following the Coinage Act of 1965, silver was removed from circulating dimes, and replaced with a copper-nickel outer layer bonded to a pure copper core. The result was a more durable and economical coin, visually similar to its silver predecessor but fundamentally different in composition and purpose.

The design remained unchanged: John R. Sinnock’s portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt continued to grace the obverse, while the reverse retained the torch flanked by olive and oak branches, symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength.
