Introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt after his death the previous year, the design by John R. Sinnock features a plainspoken, modern portrait that replaced the more allegorical Mercury dime. The reverse shows a torch flanked by olive and oak branches, symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength.
