Additional Description: The 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint is one of the more common issues in the series. Struck during the height of silver dollar production under the Bland-Allison Act, the 1886 issue reflects the federal government’s ongoing commitment to purchasing domestic silver and minting it into coinage, even when commercial demand for silver dollars was limited. Many of these coins were stored in vaults for decades before being released in the 20th century, which accounts for the abundance of well-preserved examples.
The coin features George T. Morgan’s iconic design: Liberty in classical profile on the obverse, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, symbols of American agriculture. The reverse displays a spread-winged eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, emblematic of strength and peace.
Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, the strike quality on the 1886 issue is generally good, though some softness may appear in the high points of the design, as is typical for the series.
