Additional Description: The 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar from the San Francisco Mint, identified by the “S” mint mark beneath the wreath on the reverse, is a distinctly scarcer issue within the series. With a mintage of just 750,000, it is the lowest of the year across all mints and one of the lower mintages in the entire Morgan Dollar run.
San Francisco was known for producing coins with above-average strike quality, and the 1886-S generally reflects this reputation. Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers often appear with strong definition, and many surviving examples exhibit attractive luster.
George T. Morgan’s familiar design remains unchanged: the obverse features Liberty in profile, crowned with agricultural symbols of cotton and wheat, while the reverse presents a heraldic eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch.
The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, it was struck during the height of federally mandated silver coinage under the Bland-Allison Act, despite limited demand for the denomination in actual commerce.
