Additional Description: The 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, it bears no mint mark, and its abundance in both circulated and uncirculated condition has made it a mainstay for collectors seeking well-preserved examples of George T. Morgan’s celebrated design.
Strike quality for the 1888 issue is generally strong, with good detail often visible in Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s breast feathers. Many specimens exhibit bright, frosty luster, particularly those stored in Treasury vaults for decades before being released into the collector market in the mid-20th century.
The design remains unchanged: Liberty in classical profile on the obverse, crowned with cotton and wheat to represent the agricultural wealth of the nation, while the reverse features a bold eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and peace.
Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, it was struck during the height of Bland-Allison Act silver dollar production, a period characterized by high output despite limited commercial demand.
While the 1888 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar is not scarce, its strong strike, historical context, and accessibility make it an appealing and enduring representative of late 19th-century American silver coinage.
