Additional Information: A copper metal mask bend to show a man’s face with a large swirling beard. The mask is painted and has some sculptural elements of skulls on its cheeks, and it has bell earrings. The mask is believed to be used in ceremonial Mexican dances and is from the Guerrero region of Mexico.
1920’s to 1940’s Called “barbones” (beards) Danced in a variety of traditional feast days for example in the “moros y cristianos” which alludes to the North African Arab occupation of Spain from 711 to 1492. In 1492, the Reyes Catolicos (Catholic monarchs) unified the Spanish kingdoms and expulsed the moors or “mozarabes” back to North Africa.
