Origin: Toba Batak, North Sumatra, late 19th or 20th century

Medium: Wood with some paint

Dimension: 16x6x25 in.

Condition: Light wear and scuff marks are present throughout; additionally, the majority of the paint has worn off, and some paint remains stuck in certain spots.

Description: A carved singa or a decorative ornament for house facades. The Singa has swirling elements and a face-like design towards the bottom. There are hooks and holes on the back for hanging. Some paint pigment remains in the cracks of some carved pattern areas. Singa is a mythical creature, a composite of various animals, often having elaborate horns, and it represents power and protection. They are placed high on the gable of large Batak clan houses and barns.
