It evolved from earlier swords to become a symbol of the samurai. Its origins can be traced back to the 13th century, when swordsmiths perfected the art of selective tempering. This innovation allowed for the creation of lighter, sharper, and more durable blades. The curvature of the katana made it particularly suitable for quick, decisive cuts, especially during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, when such capabilities were crucial in battle.
