About this lot

Estimated Value: $225-350

Origin: Eastern Asia, Japan, WWII or earlier

Medium: Leather, Wood, Metal, and Steel.

Dimension: 3 ft long, the tsuba is 2.5 inches in diameter

Condition: The leather on the saya is worn and has discoloration. The cap on the base of the saya is loose/removable. The blade has scratches and loss. The tsuba has a hammered look with discoloration and scratches. The handle wrapping is worn and discolored. It is breaking off of the handle exposing the wood and leather beneath. The metal cap at the base of the handle is hammered and showing discoloration.

Description: The saya features a leather design at the top. The blade includes an inscription, known as “mei,” above the tsuba. Leather is lighter than wood, making it more comfortable and easier to carry, especially when worn with armor. Additionally, leather is more affordable than other materials, such as lacquer or intricately decorated wooden sayas. While it may be less durable than wood, a leather saya can be a suitable choice for those who prioritize comfort and cost-effectiveness.
