Manufacturer: One has a sticker on the bottom that reads “Toyo Japan,” and another has a sticker that reads “Hakata Mimasu Dolls Japan” and one is stamped “Craftsman Hakata Doll” and other makers.

Dimensions: The geisha in purple measures 5x4x12.5 in. 

Condition: Light wear and scuffs on each. some have more wear than others. 

Additional Information: An assortment of traditional geisha Japanese Hakata dolls made from fired and painted unglazed clay. These dolls are known for their soft colors and realistic expressions. 

Includes two standing geishas, one in a purple kimono with a dragon mask, and another in a blue kimono with hand-painted storks on the outside. And includes two seated geishas, one is holding a bowl and another appears to have have been holding something, but the accessory is missing. And two geishas have a different style with more rounded faces and both hold umbrellas. One comes with a wooden plaque that is believed to translate to “Erilu Chizuo.”

Hakata dolls are traditional Japanese clay dolls from the Hakata region of Fukuoka, Japan. The dolls are typically made of clay and hand painted. Hakata dolls date back over 400 years, becoming a significant craft in the Fukuoka region. Often portrays figures from daily life, folklore, or theater. They reflect Japanese life and culture and are often given as gifts or souvenirs. Hakata dolls gained popularity in the United States during and after WWII as service members returning from Japan would bring them home as souvenirs.
