Additional Description: The 1853 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, a $2.50 gold coin, offers a compact yet resonant glimpse into the monetary fabric of antebellum America. Designed by Christian Gobrecht and first introduced in 1840, the Liberty Head design had, by the early 1850s, become a familiar presence in American pockets and banking houses. On the obverse, Liberty appears in refined neoclassical profile, her coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars and the date placed below. The reverse features a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the denomination 2 1/2 D. inscribed beneath. By 1853, the quarter eagle had settled into its role as a smaller, more accessible gold coin, often used in personal transactions, jewelry, or small banking exchanges. That year’s coins were struck at both the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints
