Additional Description: The 1851 Liberty Head Gold Dollar is a coin of quiet refinement and historical significance, minted during a period of dramatic expansion in both territory and wealth. Introduced just two years earlier in response to the influx of gold from California, the gold dollar was the smallest denomination, and physically, the smallest coin, the United States ever produced in gold. At just 13 millimeters in diameter and weighing 1.672 grams, it was delicate in hand yet substantial in meaning, embodying the democratic ideal of making precious-metal coinage accessible to ordinary Americans.

Designed by James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head motif on the obverse presents a youthful, neoclassical Liberty, crowned with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and framed by thirteen stars. The reverse features a simple yet elegant wreath encircling the denomination and date, 1 DOLLAR / 1851
