Additional Description:  The Chinese silver coins of 1904, 1914, and 1929—One Tael, One Yuan, and Seven Mace and Two Candareens—reflect a nation in transition. The 1904 Tael, issued under the Qing Dynasty, symbolizes late imperial efforts to modernize while clinging to traditional weight-based systems. By 1914, the new Republic introduced the One Yuan featuring Yuan Shikai’s portrait, replacing the dragon with a strong political message and setting a new standard for national currency. In 1929, the continued use of the old “Seven Mace and Two Candareens” denomination on a coin equal to one yuan shows how deeply rooted traditional systems remained, even amid modernization
