American Folk Art Coasting Sled

Item Description

Country of Origin: USA

Style: Child's Coasting / pull Sled

Dimensions: Approx 42 x 14 x 5 in.

Condition:  Age and Use Wear, Faded paint, Oxidation

Additional Information: Antique American wooden child’s coasting sled retaining its original dark green painted surface, decorative black pinstriping and large hand-stenciled lettering reading:

G.H.O. EXPRESS
1891

The sled is constructed with a broad plank riding deck, tall wooden runners fitted with iron or wear strips, fixed wooden braces and a rounded front with a pull rope hole. The crossbar between the projecting runner ends serves as part of the sled’s fixed construction.

The initials G.H.O. likely belonged to the original owner, while Express appears to have been the sled’s personal name. No confirmed manufacturer’s mark has been identified. The painted date appears to read 1891, placing it in the late Victorian period. Exact maker and state of origin are unknown, though the form is consistent with late-19th-century American sleds from northern regions such as New England, the Mid-Atlantic or upper Midwest. The original painted surface, personalized lettering and apparent date give the sled strong folk art and Americana appeal.

Condition is consistent with considerable age and use. There is fading, paint loss, scratches, abrasions, oxidation to the metal runner strips, old nail and hardware wear, board separation and multiple age splits around the rounded front. It is sold as an antique decorative collectible and is not represented as safe for modern riding use. The surface has not been restored. Original paint and patina have been preserved and should not be sanded or repainted.
