Additional Information: Antique Rockwood Sprinkler Company industrial fire alarm gong with its heavy pierced cast iron protective cover, manufactured in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The decorative domed cover is cast with large openwork lettering reading:

ROCKWOOD
WORCESTER

This assembly was originally installed as part of a commercial automatic sprinkler system. When water flowed through the sprinkler piping, a separate water powered alarm mechanism operated a striker against the metal gong, producing an exterior warning signal. The pierced cast-iron cover protected the gong while allowing the sound to project.

Probable production period is circa 1930–1950, based on documented Rockwood alarm covers of the same design. Exact production year and original building location are unknown.

Included components are:

  • Heavy cast iron Rockwood cover
  • Interior metal gong
  • Central mounting hardware
  • Rear steel mounting bar

The original water motor, striker mechanism and associated sprinkler-system hardware are not included. It is therefore sold as a historic alarm assembly and is not represented as operational.

Condition is consistent with decades of industrial use. The piece retains worn old red paint with extensive paint loss, exposed iron, surface oxidation, grime, scratches and general age wear. The gong also shows oxidation and surface discoloration. No restoration has been performed. The distressed original finish provides strong industrial, architectural and historical character.
