About this lot

Country of Origin: USA , Hillsboro, Ohio

Period: Late 19th, Early 20th Century

Manufacturer: C.S. Bell Co.

Dimensions: Approx 16 x 20 in.

Condition: Age and Use Wear, Oxidation

Additional Information: Antique C.S. Bell Company No. 2 “Crystal Metal” farm or signaling bell, manufactured in Hillsboro, Ohio, most likely during the late 19th or early 20th century.

The cast yoke is prominently marked:
THE C.S. BELL CO. – HILLSBORO, O.

The separate mounting bracket is marked “Crystal Metal Bell No. 2” and retains an early patent marking. The patent date identifies the design rather than the exact year this individual bell was manufactured. Based on the company name and construction, the bell likely dates from approximately 1894 through the early 1900s, possibly extending into the 1920s.

Originally intended for use as a farm, school, factory, general-store, or property signaling bell. The bell was mounted to a heavy wooden post or beam using the included upright bracket, while the side crank was operated by a rope to swing the bell.

The bell still rings and retains a heavily weathered, naturally aged surface with oxidation, patina, old finish residue, scratches, and general outdoor wear.

A substantial and decorative piece of American agricultural and industrial history.
