About this lot

Country of Origin: China

Medium: Red-orange Coral

Dimensions: Approx. 3.5 x 2.5 x 6.75 in.

Condition: Small crack in coral in the figure’s hair.

Additional Information: Chinese carved coral sculpture depicting Guanyin, also known as Quan Yin, the Buddhist Bodhisattva of Compassion. The elongated figure is portrayed in flowing layered robes with a serene expression, elaborate double-looped coiffure, and a flower basket suspended from the left arm. A leafy floral branch rises behind the figure.

The sculpture is carved from vivid salmon-orange organic material described as natural red or precious coral. The vertical form and coloration suggest the use of a naturally shaped coral branch, with the carving incorporating the organic contours of the material into the figure and drapery. Exact material has not been authenticated, believed to be Natural red-orange coral.

The figure is mounted on a fitted, pierced openwork carved hardwood display stand. The stand is elaborately decorated with floral-style motifs and is designed to conform to the irregular base of the coral carving.
