About this lot

Country of Origin: China

Medium: Chloromelanite Or Related Green Hardstone

Dimensions: Approx. 5 x 3 x 9.75 in. with base

Condition: Cracks in the stone and on the base.

Additional Information: Chinese carved green hardstone sculpture depicting Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, holding a ritual vase and surrounded by openwork foliage. A phoenix, or Fenghuang, is carved alongside the central figure, while a small youthful attendant is incorporated into the surrounding composition.

The openwork carving incorporates multiple figures and symbolic elements into a single flowing composition characteristic of Chinese hardstone carving. The phoenix, traditionally associated with virtue, nobility, prosperity, and feminine or yin symbolism, accompanies the central female figure. The sculpture is carved from dark mottled green hardstone consistent with chloromelanite, a jade-associated material. Exact mineral identification is not verified. The sculpture is presented on a fitted reticulated carved wooden display base.
