About this lot

Country of Origin: China

Medium: Cast Bronze

Dimensions: Approx. 6 x 1.5 x 5 in.

Condition: Details are faded with green patina / verdigris-style finish.

Additional Information: Vintage cast bronze sculpture modeled after the celebrated Eastern Han Dynasty “Flying Horse of Gansu,” also known as the “Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow,” discovered in Wuwei, Gansu, China.

The sculpture depicts a powerful celestial horse in full gallop, with its body extended dynamically and one hoof resting upon a small flying swallow. The horse features an expressive head with wide eyes, flared nostrils, an open mouth, and a high-arched tail emphasizing the sense of movement. The unusual single-point support beneath the hoof reproduces the distinctive balancing concept of the original sculpture.

The surface has a mottled green patina finish intended to resemble the verdigris associated with aged bronze. The form and finish are characteristic of 20th-century Chinese decorative reproductions inspired by the famous Han Dynasty original.
