About this lot

Country of Origin: China

Medium: Porcelain

Dimensions: Approx. 5 x 5 x 12.25 in.

Condition: No major visible flaws. Some wear on the base and rims.

Additional Information: Pair of Chinese export porcelain baluster-form vases decorated in the Canton Famille Rose tradition. Each vase features elaborately painted figural court and garden scenes within shaped cartouches, alternating with floral and bird panels depicting peonies, pomegranates, butterflies, and songbirds. Courtly narrative scenes showing traditional Chinese figures and scholars in flowing coloful robes inside palace pavilions or garden terraces.

The decoration is framed by dense green scrolling foliage, floral ornament, bats, and geometric diaper borders. The necks are fitted with applied, gilded relief decoration, including stylized handles and clambering chilong dragons along the shoulders. The rims are slightly flared and foliate or lobed in form with gilt edging.

Each vase bears a four-character red seal mark reading “乾隆年製” (Qianlong nian zhi), meaning “Made During the Qianlong Period.” The mark is considered apocryphal rather than evidence of Qianlong-period manufacture. The bright enamel palette, heavy gilding, molded relief decoration, and decorative treatment are more consistent with later Chinese production, likely dating from the Republic Period or later 20th century.
