Additional Information:  Large vintage hand painted fiberglass chef mascot head or commercial display bust, likely dating to the 1960s–1970s.

The oversized character depicts a smiling chef with brown hair, a curled mustache, rosy cheeks, neckerchief and an exceptionally tall chef’s toque. The pale green hatband is decorated with three raised stars painted blue, cream/white and red, giving the figure a distinctly French appearance. The stars may also reference a “three-star Michelin chef” theme.

The hollow shell is made from lightweight hand laid fiberglass reinforced polyester resin, visible from the waxy amber colored interior. A rusted three arm steel support with a central circular collar is permanently mounted inside, indicating that the figure was originally installed over a vertical post, pedestal or larger commercial framework.

The chef was produced for one of the following uses:

  • Restaurant, bakery or roadside food-business advertising

  • Carnival or fairground food concession display

  • Filling Balloons via mouthpiece apparatus and helium tank

  • Amusement or commercial display installation

A fixed metal stud projects from the corner of the mouth and was likely used in conjunction with a helium tank and filling apparatus to fill balloons, or a now missing decorative prop, possibly a cigarette, cigar, pipe or food related accessory. The mouth and eyes are molded into the face and therefore, not mechanically animated.

No maker’s name, business identification or confirmed character match has been found. The unusual design and mounting arrangement suggest it was probably custom made or produced in a limited commercial run by a fiberglass fabricator, sign company, or fairground-display maker.

The original distressed paint and unusual appearance give the piece strong restaurant advertising, fairground, folk art and commercial-display character.

Suitable for collections of vintage restaurant advertising, carnival and fairground artifacts, fiberglass display figures, roadside décor, theatrical props or unusual folk art.
