About this lot

Country of Origin: USA

Period: Mid 20th Century

Manufacturer: Unspecified

Dimensions: Approx 30 x 16 x 2 in.

Condition: Age and use wear, Repainting, Oxidation, Joint break on E corner.

Additional Information: Set of three large vintage fabricated metal commercial sign letters consisting of the letters O, S and E. Each measures approximately 30 inches tall, 16 inches wide and 2 inches deep, with slight variations according to letter shape.

These are open face channel letters originally made to carry exposed neon tubing. The two larger openings in each letter accommodated the ends and electrical connections of the neon tube, while the smaller holes around the faces held the original tube and support hardware.

The original neon glass, electrical components, tube supports, wiring, transformers and mounting structure are no longer present. Moreover, No manufacturer’s mark or original business identification has been found. The letters may have belonged to a longer commercial name or word, but their original arrangement cannot presently be determined.

Based on their folded sheet metal construction and exposed neon configuration, they most likely date to the mid 20th century.

Unrestored vintage commercial condition with age and exterior use wear, including: Oxidation and discoloration; scratches, scuffs, and paint loss; small dents and surface irregularities; and a joint break at the bottom corner of the letter “E”.

The letters are being offered as decorative architectural salvage and are not represented as functional illuminated signs. Older commercial paint may contain lead, so sanding or restoration should be undertaken with appropriate precautions.

Suitable for industrial décor, restaurant or bar display, theater and film props, sign collections or custom neon restoration.
