About this lot

Origin/Style: Italian Florentine / Rococo / French Provincial Style

Medium: Painted and Lacquered Gilt Wood

Dimension: Approx. 23.5 x 24 x 22.5 in. (for both)

Condition: Minimal scuffs, scratches and nicks can be found throughout both tables.

Additional Information: Pair of vintage Italian Florentine-style end or occasional tables with cream-painted wood frames, ornate gilt decoration, and slender cabriole legs. Each table features a decorative rectangular top with a central scrollwork and floral medallion design surrounded by patterned borders and extensive gilt ornament.

The tabletops display a thick, high-gloss clear coat lacquer applied over the painted surfaces that creates a smooth, reflective glass-like shield over the artwork. The clear lacquer acts like a lens, deepening the sage green, olive, and gold tones underneath and making the stenciled medallions stand out sharply. Gilt detailing follows the perimeter of the tops and continues across the carved aprons, knees, and feet. The decorative carving incorporates scrolling foliate and acanthus-inspired motifs.

The table tops have slightly different shapes. One has an elongated, modified serpentine rectangle, the other one has a much more compact, scalloped square shaped table top. The tables stand on elegant S-curved cabriole legs associated with Louis XV and Rococo furniture design, terminating in stylized scrolled feet. The combination of Florentine-style painted decoration, gilded carving, Rococo forms, and French Provincial influence is characteristic of Italian decorative furniture produced during the mid-20th century, particularly during the 1950s–1970s.
