About this lot
Photographer: Francis Wolff
Subject: Unidentified Jazz Drummer
Origin: New York
Period: Mid 20th Century
Medium: Vintage gelatin silver photograph
Dimensions: Approx. 13 x 9 in.
Condition: Age Related and Handling Wear
Additional Information: Original vintage gelatin silver jazz photograph by Francis Wolff (1907–1971), legendary photographer and co founder of Blue Note Records.
The dramatic photograph shows a jazz drummer at extraordinarily close range, photographed from within or immediately beside the drum kit—a viewpoint characteristic of Wolff’s immersive approach to documenting musicians.
The verso retains authentic photographer identification together with period Blue Note Records markings, including the faded West 61st Street, New York address stamp.
Wolff’s body of work constitutes one of the defining visual records of modern jazz and the history of Blue Note Records.
The precise drummer and session have not yet been securely identified and are intentionally left unnamed.
