About this lot
Artist: Reynold H. Weidenaar
Title: The Fuehrer’s Reply
Origin: United States, Michigan
Period: Circa 1943
Medium: Etching and aquatint in black on wove paper; original intaglio print
Dimensions: Approx. 12 x 14 in.
Condition: Mounted, Plastic Cover, Pencil signed and titled in the lower margin.
Additional Information: Original World War II era intaglio print by noted Michigan printmaker Reynold H. Weidenaar, depicting a formation of American four engine bombers flying through a dramatic moonlit sky and cloud bank. The image is executed in etching and aquatint, with the rectangular plate impression visibly pressed into the paper from the intaglio printing process.
The work is pencil titled “The Fuehrer’s Reply” at lower left and pencil signed “Reynold H. Weidenaar” at lower right. An additional pencil notation “A.A.A.” appears in the lower margin.
The subject, aircraft markings, and Weidenaar signature spelling are consistent with a circa 1943 wartime date. Weidenaar was an accomplished American printmaker particularly recognized for highly technical etchings, aquatints, and mezzotints, and his work is represented in major museum collections.
