About this lot

Country of Origin: Japan

Period: 20th Century Satsuma-Style

Medium: Porcelain Or Earthenware

Dimensions: Approx. 8.5 x 7 x 16 in.

Condition: No major visible flaws.

Additional Information: Japanese Satsuma-style lidded porcelain urn or temple jar of footed baluster form, decorated with elaborately painted figural and floral panels. The principal cartouche depicts traditionally dressed Japanese women and a child gathered beneath a weeping tree, while surrounding panels feature elaboatre floral and foliate ornament.

The cream-colored ground is extensively decorated with dense brocade, geometric, and floral patterns in polychrome enamels and raised moriage decoration. Moriage is particularly evident in the textured clothing patterns and ornamental borders, creating a raised, tactile surface. The urn is fitted with ornate twin scroll-form handles, a domed fitted lid with finial, and an elaborate multi-tiered pedestal base. Extensive gilt decoration accents the handles, lid, rim, figural panels, borders, and base. Beneath the enameled decorations is a classic cream-colored, yellowish earthenware glaze that typically features uniform, microscopic cracks known as crazing.

The overall decoration is characteristic of the Satsuma aesthetic, although the piece is more appropriately described as Satsuma-style porcelain/earthenware. The heavily decorated form and construction are consistent with Japanese decorative wares produced during the 20th century.
