About this lot

Medium: Ink And Color On Processed Rice Paper, Reproductions

Origin: China

Dimension: Approx. 20 x 37 in. (for both)

Condition: The paper exhibits minor wavy rippling, light surface creases, and curling along the edges. Has artificial foxing simulation, the blotchy discoloration sweeping across the scrolls.

Additional Information: Pair of modern Chinese decorative hanging scrolls reproducing celebrated historical Chinese paintings. The first scroll reproduces the Tang dynasty subject “Emperor Minghuang Testing a Horse” (《明皇试马图》), traditionally attributed to the Tang dynasty master Han Gan (韩干). The composition depicts Emperor Tang Xuanzong, also known as Li Longji, mounted on a piebald horse and accompanied by attendants. The scroll incorporates traditional Chinese calligraphic inscriptions and red collector-style seals modeled after those associated with the historical work and later Qing imperial collecting tradition.

The second scroll reproduces “Wang Yunke Riding an Ox” (王云客骑牛图), originally painted in 1675 by Qing dynasty artist Yang Jin (杨晋). The pastoral composition depicts Wang Yunke seated upon a water buffalo or ox, surrounded by extensive Chinese calligraphy and numerous red collector-style seals.

Both works are executed on thin paper in the traditional Chinese hanging-scroll format. These pieces are believed to be recent commercial replicas or decorative prints/paintings rather than authentic period artifacts. Such reproductions are commonly produced on processed rice paper and may incorporate artificial aging, including simulated foxing and wear, to create the appearance of antique Chinese paintings.
