Additional Description: The 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar from the New Orleans Mint, identifiable by its “O” mint mark, represents a noteworthy Southern issue from the later years of Morgan Dollar production. The 1884-O stands as a moderately scarce date within the New Orleans series.

The New Orleans Mint, long an important center of coinage in the South, produced coins known for varying strike quality. The 1884-O is no exception; many examples show softness in finer details such as Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers. Yet well-struck specimens with strong luster do exist and are particularly sought after by collectors aiming to fill the more challenging dates of the series.

George T. Morgan’s design remains the hallmark of this coin: Liberty’s serene profile graces the obverse, crowned with a Phrygian cap woven with cotton and wheat, while the reverse depicts a powerful eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbols of strength and peace. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, produced during a time when many silver dollars were stored rather than circulated.
