Additional Description: The 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar from the New Orleans Mint carries the “O” mint mark and represents one of the more accessible Southern issues in the series. With a mintage of just over 8.7 million, it was produced during a period of sustained silver dollar coinage under the Bland-Allison Act, which mandated the federal purchase of vast amounts of silver to support Western mining interests. Coins struck at the New Orleans Mint are known for their variable strike quality, and the 1883-O is no exception. While many examples show soft detail, particularly in Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s breast feathers, a portion of the mintage, particularly those later released from Treasury vaults, survive in mint state with attractive luster and minimal contact marks. The design, created by George T. Morgan, remains consistent across the series: Liberty in profile on the obverse, crowned with cotton and wheat, and a heraldic eagle on the reverse, wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1883-O Morgan Dollar was produced at a time when actual circulation of silver dollars was limited, with many coins held in storage for decades before being released into the market in the mid-20th century.
