Additional Description: The 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar from the San Francisco Mint is a standout among its peers for both quality and availability. Bearing the “S” mint mark just below the wreath on the reverse, it was produced in substantial quantity and admired for the consistently sharp strikes and lustrous finishes that distinguish San Francisco’s output during this era.

Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin features his iconic depiction of Liberty in profile, crowned with cotton and wheat, on the obverse. The reverse shows a proud eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch, imagery rich with national symbolism.

Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, issued under the requirements of the Bland-Allison Act, which obligated the U.S. Treasury to purchase and coin large quantities of domestic silver, driving Morgan Dollar production well beyond actual commercial need. It represents a classic example of the mint’s superior craftsmanship during the height of silver dollar production.
