Additional Description: The 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint is among the more common issues in the series. Struck without a mint mark, it reflects the ongoing influence of the Bland-Allison Act, which mandated the U.S. Treasury to purchase and coin vast quantities of silver regardless of actual demand for the denomination.

As a Philadelphia issue, the 1887 Morgan Dollar generally exhibits solid strike quality, with Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers often showing good definition. The design by George T. Morgan remains iconic: Liberty’s profile graces the obverse, adorned with a Phrygian cap crowned by cotton and wheat, while the reverse features a spread-winged eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, framed by a wreath and surrounded by inscriptions representing the nation’s ideals. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1887 Philadelphia Morgan offers an excellent example of the type, combining historical context, strong eye appeal, and accessibility.
