Additional Description: The 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar from the New Orleans Mint, marked with an “O” beneath the wreath. This coin reflects the continued activity of the New Orleans Mint during a period when silver dollars were being struck primarily to satisfy legislative requirements rather than widespread circulation.

New Orleans coins from this era are known for somewhat variable strike quality. The 1887-O often exhibits softness in the finer details, particularly in Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers, though well-struck examples can still be found.

George T. Morgan’s design is showcased here with Liberty’s dignified profile crowned by a cap woven with cotton and wheat on the obverse, while the reverse features the iconic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbols of both strength and peace.

Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, Morgan Dollars of the period, the 1887-O was often held in government reserves, leading to a number of well-preserved examples that have survived into the modern era.
