Additional Description: The 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar from the New Orleans Mint, bearing the “O” mint mark. Strike quality on the 1888-O can be inconsistent. Liberty’s hair above the ear and the eagle’s breast feathers are frequently lacking in sharp detail, even on uncirculated pieces. Nonetheless, the coin’s overall appearance can be quite attractive when paired with the vibrant luster often found on these Southern mint issues. The design, created by George T. Morgan, remains a classic of American coinage. The obverse features Liberty in profile, crowned with cotton and wheat, symbols of both Northern industry and Southern agriculture; while the reverse shows an eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by a laurel wreath and national mottos. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, produced under the continued mandate of the Bland-Allison Act, the 1888-O was part of the government’s effort to support domestic silver mining through large-scale coinage, much of which was held in reserve for decades.
