Additional Description: Issued by the Philadelphia Mint in 1914, this Indian Head two-and-a-half dollar gold coin embodies Bela Lyon Pratt’s celebrated incuse design; an artistic innovation that set a new standard for American coinage in the early twentieth century. The recessed portrait of a Native American male in feathered headdress on the obverse and the eagle standing confidently on the reverse together convey a sense of dignity and national identity. Believed to fall between Very Good and Fine grade, the coin bears a visible scratch across the reverse, passing over the motto E Pluribus Unum. Despite this mark and the wear of circulation, the piece retains much of its sculptural presence and historical appeal, serving as a tangible reflection of Pratt’s enduring contribution to the art of U.S. gold coin design.
